At our reception, Judge Zdzislaw Sikora of CCS told our own Sherry Eid the hows and whys of his choices. Below are Sherry's notes of Sikora's comments:
First Place: Irish Lass in Autumn
by Dean Rogers
A tour de force in drawing. Our judge liked the changes in temperature; liked the light touch and especially the use of the leaf.
Second Place: Special Moment By Linda Lutze
Professor Sikora liked the limited palette and the use of paper as an integral part of the art; nice connection with the viewer, and particularly liked the understated necklace and lace.
Third Place: Whiskey Mountain Cowboy By Linda Schumacher
A beautiful rendering of material but Sikora would have liked Linda to have expanded the surface to see more of the cowboy.
Honorable Mention: Lighthouse Vista By Barbara Gage Rex
The artwork is just a step away from abstraction. The composition is well considered but our judge would have liked it on a larger scale. (The desire for larger scale was a comment on much of the art work in the show.)
Merit Award: New Beginnings By Carol Batten
Terrific darks!
Merit Award: Unbroken By Olga Dremach
Sikora liked the assignment of temperatures, the linkages of negative space, and the response to the fractured quality.
Merit Award: Summer Color Burst By Liesa Helfer
He liked the color usage and the details.
Merit Award: You are Worthy By Gail Borgman McGuire
Professor Sikora liked the color linkage and found that the actual piece came off much better than the slide.
